UFH WINS OR!

NTEU has won the CCMA case against the University of Fort Hare who refused to give us organisational rights.  The award was handed down last week Friday.

It has been a long and hard fight, but we finally have a presence at this historic university!  The road ahead is still going to be a tough one, but the first major hurdle is over.

The National Office is now assisting the branch with the logistics of organising an official inauguration general meeting (IGM) to establish the branch officially.

The following people have been directly involved with in-person meetings behind closed doors, or in open-air meetings with workers and members at the various campuses:

  • Moses Peo (National President) who led a delegation including Ms Vuyo Mazwi (WSU Chairperson), Mr Jako Nel (National Marketing Officer) and Grant Abbott (General Secretary) in meeting with the university on a number of times to negotiate the RA (Recognition Agreement).
  • Charles Hanyani, a member at the university, who has already acted as our representative at a number of CCMA cases involving members.
  • Xolani Tom who has acted as the interim chairperson,  suffering political retribution because of his promoting of NTEU. He was suspended for over 6 months for advertising NTEU!
  • Jako Nel who worked on a marketing plan and materials to promote the union there, resulting in some 200 outsourced workers being signed up.  Together with Vuyo Mazwi they addressed workers at campuses, with great success!
  • Linda Vusani, a member at the university, ensured that membership applications were loaded and didn’t mysteriously “get lost” – which often happens there!

There is still much to be done at this university and the need to elect a Branch Executive Committee (BEC), to start advancing the rights of our members, is urgent.

However we take a moment to remember that together we can conquer giants!

NTEU is excited to commence turning the wheels of change at this university and look forward to the great future of NTEU-UFH!
