NTEU WELCOMES THE MINISTER’S WITHDRAWAL OF SETA CHAIRPERSON APPOINTMENTS

Yesterday morning, NTEU wrote to the Minister of Higher Education and Training, expressing grave concerns at the process and seemingly lack of transparency in the appointment of SETA Chairpersons. NTEU, therefore, welcomes the notice withdrawing the appointments and effectively opening up the process again.

NTEU is indeed encouraged that the Minister has acknowledged the procedural error and been mature enough to correct it.

Institutions and other entities within the sector are struggling, and we need to rebuild and strengthen our governance structures to ensure a healthy and vibrant PSET environment that can contribute to economic growth going forward.

Even though we see this as a positive step, we urge the Minister to constitute the boards of SETA’s urgently. Our 21 SETA’s are operating on auto-pilot since 1 April, and this governance vacuum exacerbates weaknesses in the sector; corruption breeds in governance vacuums, and we cannot allow that to continue.”, said NTEU General Secretary, Grant Abbott.
